First Racquet successfully hosted its 2026 May UTR ONE-DAY Verified Event on May 9 at the County Home Park Tennis Courts in Cockeysville, Maryland, bringing together more than 20 players from across the region for a full day of competitive tennis and community support.
The event marked the second tournament hosted by First Racquet since the establishment of its Baltimore chapter, continuing the nonprofit organization’s mission of supporting underserved children through tennis.
The tournament featured both doubles and singles competition using a UTR-based compass draw format, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels. Morning doubles matches showcased a unique mix of junior and adult players competing side-by-side, creating an energetic and supportive atmosphere throughout the courts. In the afternoon, the singles event featured many high school varsity players competing in highly competitive matches.
Participants traveled from various local communities as well as from as far away as Charlestown, West Virginia, highlighting the growing reach and popularity of First Racquet events.
The tournament almost faced major obstacles before it even began. Organizers received the official event permit only 10 days prior to the tournament date, creating significant challenges in player recruitment, scheduling, and overall event planning. Despite the short preparation window, the tournament successfully attracted a strong field of players and ran smoothly throughout the day.
Weather conditions also appeared uncertain leading up to the event, as forecasts predicted rain during the middle of the singles competition. Fortunately, the rain never arrived. Instead, players enjoyed cool overcast conditions in the morning before the clouds cleared later in the day, giving way to sunshine and a beautiful sunset that capped off the event.
In addition to competing, several players also supported the organization by donating tennis racquets and equipment to help underserved youth gain greater access to the sport.
First Racquet, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, continues to expand its community impact through local tennis events, youth support initiatives, and equipment donation efforts.
Tournament organizers thanked all players, families, volunteers, and supporters who helped make the event a success despite the tight timeline and uncertain weather forecast.
